3.1 Sound Exhibition: A vanished world in sound

From the 24th of November 2007 to the 25th of Februari 2008 a vanished world in sound will be created in the historical department of museum Het Domein in Sittard. A crying baby, the din of old factories, local songs of long ago. Do you remember how it all used to sound? These sounds and more were recorded using a tape recorder, a device developed in the fifties and later overtaken by cassette tapes, cd’s, iPods… Museum Het Domein in Sittard tells the history of this almost forgotten device: the producers’ high expectations, their ardent attempts to sell the thing, buyers’ efforts to fit the apparatus into their living rooms, but also the artistic usage of contemporary sound artists. In the exhibition work is shown by sound artists: Aam Solleveld, Rod Summers, Ray Moon and Paul Devens. Sound Souvenirs will allow you to listen to the disappeared sounds of a time and technology that will revive your fondest memories. The exhibition is a collaboration of the museum’s Department of Urban History and Contemporary Art, The Maastricht University, the Foundation Sittard’s Past, and the Foundation Intro.in situ. Would you like to come and listen?
